A lesser known spect of the Center is its extraordinary collection of fine art dating from the nineteenth century to the present day. Beyond the Blues: Reflections of African America in the Fine Arts Collection of the Amistad Research Center, presented by the New Orleans Museum of Art and the Amistad Research Center, marks a long overdue public access to these remarkable works of art. On view at NOMA April 11 through July 11, 2010, the exhibition will feature nearly 150 works including paintings, prints, and sculpture, as well as archival materials such as letters and sketchbooks, providing a fascinating glimpse of the artistic process. As the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina draws near, The Historic New Orleans Collection will present a new exhibition charting the institution’s efforts to document the storm, its aftermath and the region’s recovery. Faced with the work of chronicling both unprecedented devastation and the city’s recovery, The Collection implemented two long-term institutional initiatives in early October 2005: an extensive oral history program focused on recording the experiences of first responders and a photography project intended to document the scale of the chaos throughout the city left in Katrina’s wake. Selections from these projects form the core of Katrina + 5: Documenting Disaster. Other items on exhibit include historical maps and materials exploring the history of tidal flooding and storm surge in New Orleans over the course of the past two centuries and a multimedia station featuring an interactive timeline and related resources. Katrina + 5 serves as a reminder of the history made since August 29, 2005, and The Collection’s ongoing efforts to record it.

Absinthe was a cherished sipping drink for New Orleanians and a critical ingredient in the city’s most historic cocktail-The Sazerac. There just couldn’t be a substitute for Absinthe. That is until J.M. Legendre invented Herbsaint in 1934. Though the “Sacred Herb” was originally created as a stand-in for Absinthe, Herbsaint has since developed a flavor all its own. For many it has become the ingredient of choice in a Sazerac while also inspiring its own series of cocktails such as the Herbsaint Frappé, the Herbsaint Suisse and the Herbsaint Punch. The New Orleans Cultural and Culinary Preservation Society is inviting all cocktail enthusiasts to explore Herbsaint a little further at Frappe Fridays. During this series of luncheons, we’ll dive head first into the history of this legendary liquor and some of the city’s most accomplished bartenders will lead demonstrations on how to craft a number of Herbsaint cocktails. Join us as we honor a New Orleans liquor that has become irreplaceable.

The Historic New Orleans Collection and the Ray Charles Program at Dillard University Beans and Rice: A Culinary and Cultural Odyssey Reception and one-day forum. Beans and rice is a classic New Orleans dish. Usually served on Monday, the traditional wash-day fare allowed New Orleanians to use the hambone from Sunday dinner and slow cook the meal all day, leaving time to do laundry. Neighborhoods all over the city continue to cook red beans and rice on Mondays, and the meal’s popularity spans generations, race and class. Although a local tradition, beans and rice has cultural connections across the Atlantic world. Culinary historians trace the origins of the dish to Africa, the Caribbean region, and Europe. From West Africa’s Grain Coast to Cuba and Haiti, many cultures have their own versions of red beans and rice that have influenced the New Orleans specialty. At the day-long forum at The Historic New Orleans Collection, a distinguished panel of speakers—including Dr. Judith Carney, “Hoppin’” John Taylor, and Dr. Maricel Presilla—will discuss the ingredients, processing, multi-cultural connections and consumption of beans and rice.

When a hungry worker would come in off of the picket line the call would go out: "here comes another poor boy!" From those humble beginnings spring the many varieties of the po-boy sandwich; a New Orleans original of which there is no sub-stitute! The Po-Boy Preservation Festival will also highlight the ongoing revitalization of the Oak Street corridor.
